Recipient: Anushka Moudgil, Awarded for two years, Grade 11 & 12
Anuskha is the recipient of the Russell De Valois Scholarship (23-25). Having studied in a Cambridge program prior to KIS, Anushka was looking for an academic program that would allow her to enhance her worldview in Economics and Business. Partly Russian and partly Indian by ethnicity, Anoushka was a wonderful student with a keen interest in STEM subjects. Apart from her academic pursuits, Anoushka immersed herself in our Music and Hiking program. In her own words, “As my two years in KIS came to a conclusion, I left Kodi with a myriad of memories and experiences. Whether it was having discussions with my teachers, lounging on the library lawn with my friends, or just taking in the beauty of Kodaikanal out on hikes, everything KIS had offered me helped me grow. To grow in intellect, to grow in kindness, to grow in friendship and understanding. To me, these memories and experiences aren’t just something to look back fondly on, but also lessons and reflections of how I was able to develop myself into a better person, and how I can keep developing myself further. For instance, KIS has helped me foster a stronger learning attitude to the point where right now, during the summer break, I can’t help but try to teach myself some more German, piano and music theory! KIS has also helped me determine what I would like to continue doing. Though initially I was unsure if I could handle the intensity of Medicine, after much thought and encouragement from teachers and my career counselor, I feel confident in my choice of pursuing Medicine at Saint Petersburg State University. I would like to thank you dear donors once again for helping my reality take the shape that it did and for helping me set the stage for me to shape my future.”

Recipient: Vedika Dave, Awarded for 2 years, Grade 11 and 12
Vedika Dave was awarded the KIS STEM scholarship for Women (23-25). Vedika aspires to be a Scientist pursuing her passion in Bio Chemistry. Originally from Gujarat, Vedika has already made many strides in her chosen field, working with eminent professors in Indian Universities and assisting them with their research work. At KIS, she was a member of Science National Honors Society, and was head of the Girls in STEM club. A skilled dancer, Vedika was a constant in any school performance. Overall, Vedika has been a valuable addition to the KIS community! In her own words, “Studying at KIS was a transformative experience for me. The IBDP has been an extremely rigorous program and it has stretched my abilities in several ways. I have also had the opportunity to connect with students from so many different backgrounds and I feel like these friendships will last a lifetime. I am thankful to all my donors who have made this journey possible for me.”

The SEAR Scholarship is presented annually to two deserving students from the Southeast Asian region, initially being granted to students of Burmese origin entering Grade 11 at KIS. These students are recognized for their exceptional personal character, outstanding academic achievements, and unwavering determination to overcome challenges. The scholarship seeks individuals who not only strive for personal success but also demonstrate a profound commitment to making a positive impact on their communities.
This scholarship has been initiated by KIS Alumna Ms. Maureen Aung-Thwin (’66) in loving memory of her mother, Margaret Aung-Thwin, a dedicated educator and former KIS faculty member. It embodies the spirit of perseverance, academic excellence, and commitment to community values that Mrs. Aung-Thwin exemplified throughout her life.
Margaret Aung-Thwin’s legacy as an educator and translator is deeply ingrained in the SEAR Scholarship. Her multifaceted career spanned various countries and cultures, reflecting a life dedicated to education and cultural exchange. She was the first of fourteen children born to John F. Hodgson and Naw Thet Po, and she pursued her education with a BA and B.Ed from Judson College in Rangoon and an M.A. from SUNY Cortland. A Fulbright Exchange Scholar, she taught in various international settings, including schools in Rangoon, Kodaikanal, and Cornell University, and led adult education programs for the Miccosukee Native American community in Florida. Her significant contribution to Burmese literature, particularly through her translation of Ma Ma Lay’s “Not Out of Hate,” highlights her dedication to bridging cultural divides through education.
This scholarship is not merely a financial grant; it is an invitation to join a community that values educational excellence, cultural understanding, and a commitment to improving the world. It is a tribute to the enduring impact of a remarkable educator and a testament to the power of education to change lives.
Criterion for granting the KIS SEAR Scholarship
- The scholarship will be granted to a Burmese origin residing in Myanmar or outside and is seeking an admission at KIS in grade 11.
- The applicant should demonstrate a strong financial need (i.e., family income that is not sufficient to cover all education-related expenses at KIS).
- Applicants should excel academically and exhibit outstanding personal character. The recipient will need to maintain a grade-point average (GPA) above 3.3.
- Applicants should exhibit determination and perseverance in the face of challenges and should possess a strong will to succeed.
- “Concern for Others” is a key KIS value. Applicant must not be involved in activity that affects the peace, decorum or democracy in their host country.
Amount Awarded
- This scholarship is a two-year grant covering full tuition and development fees for two students incoming in Grade 11 until graduation.

In March 2022, the KIS Center for Environment and Humanity submitted a grant proposal to Kodai Friends International to support the establishment of a Seed Bank, Nursery, and Food Forest on the CEH campus (former Swedish school) over the course of 3 years. The objectives of this project are:
- to raise awareness about the threatened biodiversity of the Palani Hills
- to provide experiential learning opportunities for KIS, local, and international visiting students on biodiversity conservation and its intersection with land use and modern agriculture
- and, to practice sustainable land management, regenerative agriculture, and biodiversity conservation within our campus.
Summary of Activities:
Thanks to funding from Kodai Friends International for Year 1 of the project, CEH gathered environmental expertise to develop a regenerative agriculture based landscape design for the 2-acre property. While the landscape design was in progress, CEH began cultivation on a small area of the campus to experiment on sustainable farming techniques with students and local farmers. CEH also started a small Shola Nursery for saplings to be planted within the CEH and other KIS campuses. Finally, CEH integrated this project and the concept of Regenerative Agriculture into the KIS Ecoclub for students grade 9-12. This project served as a platform for KIS students to understand agriculture practices in Kodaikanal through field trips and interactions with farmers in villages such as Poombarai, Prakashapuram, Pallangi-Kombai, and Vilpatti. Students also worked to develop the cultivation zone on the CEH campus, where they planted legumes, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. It was a challenge to use only organic and regenerative agriculture principles on our land, but this exercise helped students internalize the difficulties that farmers face in producing food at a large scale. Through the KIS Ecoclub and this Food Forest project at CEH, we encourage all students to think about the future agriculture, and how it can be improved by making food systems more efficient, inclusive, and resilient, while ensuring a sustainable natural resource base.
Expansion of Project in 2023-24: Funding for Year 1 of the Food Forest Project Proposal submitted in March 2022 was crucial in boosting CEH’s activities and direction toward sustainable land management and regenerative agriculture. Throughout our activities in Year 1, we learned that the project has scope to be much larger than a food forest, Shola nursery, and seed bank. We seek to expand the project to the entire campus to offer an immersive learning experience on the intersection between agriculture and biodiversity. The outdoor space will be divided into different zones according to regenerative agriculture objectives, with a trail connecting various zones to facilitate campus tours. The journey will highlight sustainable farming, ecosystem services, climate resilience, carbon sequestration, soil and water management, and self-sustenance. CEH now has a detailed design for the entire property to help visitors understand concepts of a food forest, sustainable land use, and backyard biodiversity conservation within the context of the Palani Hills. Local residents, school students in Kodaikanal and abroad, and tourists will leave CEH with the knowledge, tools, and inspiration to implement principles of regenerative agriculture wherever they go.
Spending Summary:
In Year 1, CEH focused on preparing the land, collecting all the basic tools and equipment required to set up a food forest, and gathered information from environmental experts to plan and design the 2-acre property. 62% of the Year 1 funds were used toward environmental expertise to put together a detailed landscaping plan and of the CEH outdoor space. Due to unmet expectations of a consultant hired in June 2022, the project was recommissioned to environmental experts in permaculture and wild-scaping design – this resulted in an additional 1 Lakh Rupees spent on environmental expertise. Maintenance of the pear orchard, vegetable beds, nursery, and shola forest zone require consistent operational labor – 29% of Year 1 funds were used for landscaping and seasonal operations. Finally, CEH did not build a greenhouse in Year 1 as planned. Instead, we used the greenhouse as a hands-on learning opportunity for students to construct one on their own using bamboo. This bamboo greenhouse will be used for ornamental plants. CEH will build a larger greenhouse for summer crops such as cucumber, tomatoes, chilies, bell peppers, and eggplant in Year 2.
